When a blaze tears through thousands of hectares in the Gironde or Andalusia, the public is fed a diet of inevitability. We are told that climate change has turned these regions into powder kegs waiting for a stray spark.

Let us look at the actual mechanics of wildfire propagation. A spark needs fuel to become a disaster. The answer lies in the institutional cowardice of modern forestry management.
